đź’śYour next race: Doubles or Solo?

Hey Reader!

Today is a mixed emotion parenting day.

I dropped my lil Gremlin off at his first day of day care this morning!!

I've had him home with me full time for 2 years now & this is something I’d been wanting for a while but couldn’t justify for myself until the ACL.

Now with school starting back we don’t have the family help like before so it was time!

I’m both relieved I can get back to work with less distractions and stress, but I’m also gonna miss my lil gym buddy!

It’ll be an adjustment for both of us, but I know he’ll love it and make a ton of lil friends there!

But onto today’s fit tip!

Things That are Killing Your Hybrid Races

Ep.10 - Doubles or Solo?

Ok, so today’s tip won’t “kill your hybrid race” if you don’t do it, but it could help make you a much better athlete!

I’ve noticed some hybrid athletes are strictly solo racers or doubles/team racers while some do a mix of both.

Let’s talk about where that sweet spot is for the best performance.

Doubles/Teams Only

The vibes & community is high, and the intensity is even higher!

Teams are the perfect “gateway drug” to hybrid racing and perfect for getting out on the course the first few times to gain confidence.

They’re also great for athletes with slight limitations (this is where I’ll start back when I can return to play to avoid that box a bit longer).

And of course, you can still team up and be super competitive with teams.

It’s a super fun division and you should definitely do it, buuuut…

If you strictly do teams, you’re missing out on a lot of performance lessons that only solo racing can teach you.

Solo Only

Solo racing forces you to pay close attention to pacing and nail down your strategy to a T.

Because you can’t take a full rest in a solo, you learn to manage intensity levels and HR more closely.

Solo’s are also a great place to see YOUR stats.

Without a teammate to blur the data, a solo shows your own performance for the whole race and gives you a clear picture of your strengths, weaknesses, and improvements over time.

Plus, the fitness required for a solo is typically greater than the demands of a team, so working towards solo goals will can make you a better athlete overall.

Buuuut if you strictly do solos, you miss out on a ton of joy that teams can bring.

The community, trust in a teammate, training together, and accountability of teams are pretty great motivators!

Doing a Mix of Both

This is the sweet spot in my opinion.

Train for solos, enjoy the teams and get the best of both worlds!

It keeps you well rounded as an athlete and a competitor.

You get your own stat tracking to improve your personal performance and can leverage those strengths in a team to bring out the best results for you and your teammate!

What camp are you in? Solo, teams, or both?

Knee Update...

I’m 74 days (10 weeks) out of my right ACL reconstruction surgery!

  • I’m cleared to start back to the row ERG with BOTH LEGS in the straps!! (Super happy about this one! Arms only & 3 limb rowing are hard!!)
  • The PT did some retesting last week on mobility and strength to assess any gaps that need to be minimized before I can start jogging again… so that means jogging is coming soon!!
  • I’m weaning off the brace in public more too (like right now I’m sitting at a coffee shop without the brace!)

Exciting side note: I set my CSCS exam date! I’ve been studying since October and am super excited for my first attempt! Exam is on August 26!! Time to review!

Our summer series is almost over, only 1 more (very important) episode left!

DM or reply & let me know what questions or topics you have for late August!
